Atlanta artist Christy Kinard is a Southern girl. She's inspired by the fresh bouquets of flowers from the table of her childhood home. Her paintings are pieced together like the kaleidoscope quilts her great aunts used to make. And the boldness of her work is like the character of Southern woman. Christy says, "Beyond the well-kept exterior and femininity, like my work, the women of the South can be strong, creative and playful."

I just found my own Art Deco treasure for the shop, this fabulous period-inspired mirror. It's new, but the glass is really antiqued (which means it's super "smokey" looking), and it's encased in a simple painted frame. Here it hangs above a chest as one large piece. But it's so versatile. The mirror is actually three panels connected by hinges, so it can also be displayed as a screen, or separated and hung as three individual, smaller mirrors.

Here's a close-up of the cut pattern of the glass. Definitely Art Deco... but subtle enough for my traditional girl taste!

Antiques for Kids

One of my pet peeves is Rooms To Go. If you've never had the chance to visit one of these establishments, I know you've seen the commercials. They're always running specials where you can walk out with an entire room - the couch, chairs, coffee table - and they EVEN throw in a flat screen television. There's no picking out styles, no fabric swatches to shuffle through. It's easy. And in my opinion, boring and a little bit lazy.

Being a mom, I have bought my fair share from Pottery Barn Kids. But furnishing an entire room from there isn't much different than Rooms To Go. The things are cute. But all together, they don't have a ton of personality. See what I mean?

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you know I'm all about antiques. Even for kids. It's obviously not smart to buy a super expensive, museum quality piece. It will no doubt be rammed with remote control cars and at some point, covered with scratch n' sniff stickers. I personally think an antique chest is a good workhorse for a child - it can store toys, clothing, and even can be something nostalgic to use when the child grows up and moves into their first home of their own.

Christmas Shopping at Highgate House

Are you done with your Christmas shopping yet? I knocked most of mine out during Partner’s Card, which is a good thing because I won’t go near the crowds at NorthPark right now. Not even for my Neiman Marcus tortilla soup!

If you’ve still got some shopping to do, there’s a wonderful event this weekend at Highgate House, a beautiful antique store in the Design District, 1230 Dragon Street. The fun starts on Thursday night from 5 to 9 p.m., with food and shopping for goodies from Nellie’s Shortbread, Marsha’s Jewelry, Dewey’s Sugarcakes, Altercat Crosses, Sutton’s Seasoned Salt, EMYO art and notecards, Lizzie Perry art, and Write Design cups. Proceeds from the event – which runs through Saturday – benefit one of my favorite non-profits, Council for Life.

You probably should swing by and do a little shopping for yourself, anyway. Highgate House owners Dudley and Aimee Simms have achieved that perfect mix of traditional and contemporary in their recently-opened storefront on Dragon Street. The space is a sophisticated mix of European antique furniture and smalls gathered from trips abroad, paired with more contemporary paintings from artists like Memphis-based Emily Ozier and Dallas’ own Lizzie Perry and Charlotte Seifort.

And best of all, there’s ALWAYS parking on Dragon Street. Hope to see you Thursday night finishing off your list. Cheers!

A Segmented Mirror

There's something I love about a segmented mirror. Maybe it's the antiqued, smoky glass. Or the modern-cut mirror inside the simple, unadorned frame. This pretty version is featured in the new holiday edition of Traditional Home.

And I just unpacked this one inside my booth this week. Can you see the little gilded rosettes in the picture? They really make the mirror. And the glass is antiqued without being too distressed. It would be beautiful over a French chest or inside a pretty powder bath.

Vintage Turkeys

Aren't these little vintage turkeys the cutest Thanksgiving decoration? They are made of paper mache and originated in Germany after World War II. My mom has been collecting them over the years, and at Thanksgiving they sit proudly on the English chest in her foyer.

The first antique I owned was a tiny English bamboo side table. It's been a workhorse over the years, sitting next to my couch, bed and finally beside a chair in my office.

The versatile size is what I love most about these pieces, which first became popular in the late 1800s in England. Joni Webb of Cote de Texas has photographed many rooms over the years with English bamboo tables:

Leontine Look-alike

There are monograms. And then there are MONOGRAMS. If you've ever seen New Orleans-based Leontine Linens, you know what I'm talking about. Their modern marks put the simple script to shame.

I've had my eye on these Leontine dinner napkins - that's my Herend china pattern! But at $140 a piece, well, it just wasn't happening in this house.

So one night while hunting on One Kings Lane, I found a set of white linen napkins with coral scallop trim. When they arrived, I took them to Madison, a beautiful gift store in Dallas' Highland Park Village. It's not Leontine, but their monogram styles are a close second in my book!

And here they are. Madison did a beautiful job, and at a fraction of the price. I think this calls for a dinner party!

Urban Market in Houston is one of my favorite antique shows. It's not too big, it's an easy trip from Dallas, plus they serve wine while you shop, which is always an added bonus.

So last weekend, we packed up the kids and headed to Houston for a weekend of shopping (for me and my cousin Laura) and NASA (for Stroud, Pablo and the kids). The trip started off with Shirley Temples in the hotel lobby, a great dinner at Escalante's and a good night's sleep.

Laura and I hit the road early on Saturday, and our first stop was Memorial Antiques and Interiors, 8719 Katy Freeway. MAI doesn't look like much from the road, but the inside is filled with finds from some of the best antique dealers in Texas, many who show at Marburger.

Next on our list was Antiques and Interiors on Dunlavy, another antique mall (I hate that word!) that again, looks dismal from the curb. But it's home to dealers who have a good eye and great prices.

As you know, I have a thing for dog beds - and not the duck canvas kind from LL Bean. This one from dealer The Fabulous Flea would be big enough for Trooper. Too bad I already bought him one.

And look at this sweet one made from an old Swedish doll bed.

I can't go to Houston without eating lunch at Tiny Boxwoods, the cafe tucked inside the Thompson & Hanson nursery.

And you can't eat at Tiny Boxwoods without leaving without your very own tiny boxwood! Aren't they the cutest?

My favorite stop on this trip was this little warehouse, which sits behind Tiny Boxwoods. Twenty Six Twenty, which is named for its address on Joanel Street, is super small but packed with gorgeous pieces that are surprisingly well priced.

This vignette sits right inside the door. I am still dreaming about that melon Murano lamp!

One of my favorite blogs is Joni Webb's Cote de Texas. Joni is a Houston native, so she's shared some of her favorite shops, including this pair on Bissonnet - Watkins Culver and Shabby Slips. Of course we had to make a stop!

I thought these butterflies cut out of printed paper were so unusual.

With just an hour before Urban Market opened, we popped into The Gray Door, 3465 West Alabama. This lamp was one of our favorites. Owner Donna Temple Brown made it from a 1950s iron table base.

The gates to Urban Market opened at 4 p.m., and Laura and I were the first in line! The show has moved into a parking lot in downtown Houston. It's such a different feel from the last time I visited, when it was set up in a field on the outskirts of town. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the new location. And neither were many of the dealers I spoke to. It felt a little cramped. But I grabbed my wine and headed inside.

I did pick up a couple of things for my booth - a pair of large dough bowls and italian columns I'm going to make into lamps. But the show just isn't the same. I'm not sure that I'll be making a special trip again. Better save my money for Round Top!

And the boys had a great time at NASA, and even brought the mommies some delicious space ice cream (which really is good, by the way). Before we hit the road on Sunday, we ended the trip with beignets - the boys were in heaven!

The annual Anniversary Party at Antique Row is just around the corner, and this year we have a special treat - Tulsa designer Charles Faudree will stop by the shindig to sign copies of his newest book, Details.

Mr. Faudree is the king of all things French Country, and is known for his layered, interesting vignettes. And that's just what his new book focuses on - the finishing touches he's famous for.

And if meeting one of America's top 100 designers isn't enticing enough, Antique Row is discounting the whole store 20 percent, plus serving all of the wine and hors d'oeuvres a girl could want. Cheers!

Round Top, Round Two

The past week has been a total whirlwind with two trips down to Round Top. Before I show you my latest venture, I have to thank my sweet husband, who has played Mr. Mom (even working my school cafeteria shift, I might add) so I could go on this very important business trip. Really, it is a business trip, in a sense for me. But more than anything, it's just good girl time - talking, shopping and sipping a cocktail or two.

So on Tuesday morning, we set off to hit Marburger Farm and the Big Red Barn, two of the "higher end" antique shows. There's not much digging involved when you explore Marburger. Everything in the six big white tents is pretty much to die for. Check out these sconces I saw when I walked inside. See that little red sticker? They're already sold, just 15 minutes after the gates were opened.

The patina on these antique mirrors is so pretty. Can't you just picture them inside a powder bath?

My mom is working to redesign the Chi Omega sorority house at SMU. Wouldn't a pair of these owl lamps be perfect in the home's new entry? Sadly, I have a hunch they're probably not in the budget.

After Marburger, we hopped in my truck and headed out to the fields. Going through the fields is work, but it's where the bargains are. One tent houses rugs made by a vendor who sells his collection to ABC Carpet & Home in New York. He takes antique rugs, removes all color, then distresses them by shearing the pile super short. Then the rugs are dyed again in bright hues and patchwork-pieced together.

Another field vendor sold balls made of wisteria vines, which Lindsay and Shawna snagged. Lindsay is using hers as a centerpiece on her dining room table; Shawna picked up this one for a client's home. The dealer started with more than 200 balls, and he only had a handful left for us to choose from!

Courtenay also bought some wisteria, but her version is mounted on a stand. It's going to be a Christmas gift for her mom, who has a clean-lined, Asian-influenced home in Hilton Head. This wisteria sculpture will be a perfect fit.

We ended the day with drinks at Royer's in the fields, a nice ending to a hard day's work. Oh, how I love sangria wine!

The next morning we were up bright and early to secure our spot in line at the Big Red Barn. We waited here for 45 minutes, but it's worth it - we were some of the first inside the Happy Hunter, a Tulsa dealer who has the most beautiful things. I picked up several things for my booth like some gorgeous blue Chinese export plates, antique engravings and a tiny bamboo side table covered in a cute leopard print.

But I think my favorite find was this vintage Highland Park High School pennant I bought for my son Leighton's room. I would love to get an Arkansas pennant for Stroud and an OU pennant for myself on my next trip, and frame them together inside our game room!

Round Top, Round One

It's Round Top time again! I always go early with my mom and sister to the famous 10-day Texas antique show to hunt for my booth. It's not easy making the trip two times in a week, but it's worth it - most of the bargains are scooped up quick! This picture shows what it's like on the first day - people are literally pulling up chairs and buying things right off this truck as they're unloading it.

One of our favorite stops is the Blue Hills show. I had to take a picture of this hot air balloon basket. What on earth is something going to do with this???

But this pretty piece, on the other hand, would be such a workhorse with my two boys. Can't you just picture it by the back door, filled with soccer balls, umbrellas and shoes? And so much more charm than a built-in mudroom. If only I had the space!

Another favorite dealer is Elephant Walk Antiques inside the EX-CESS show. I've found a lot from this booth over the years. This time, I came home with this old French garden bench to put in front of my fireplace. I'm so over these French grain and coffee sacks, though. I'm going to have to recover it for sure!

The same dealer had these pretty pair of demilune tables with painted iron legs. Already sold before the show even officially opened!

I love the color of these willow baskets. Perfect for collecting ugly plastic toys or firewood.

We also stopped at "The Depot", a show that usually is junky, but there's a silver dealer there that I love. We got out of the car and spotted this birdhouse, made entirely out of twigs. It took some convincing, but we got my mom to buy it for her lake house. She's going to have a stand made for it and put it against a wall of windows. It came complete with a mouse nest inside, but it's a treasure!

I found a few things for my booth (pictures posted soon!), and am heading back again Tuesday morning with some girlfriends. I am on the hunt for something interesting to put in my dining room on either side of the bay window. I'd love some ideas from readers. What do you think would work?

CelebrateART! - Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who attended CelebrateART! on Thursday night to support Nicole Groth, Lizzie Perry, Meredith Grabham, Gina Dunn, Erin Chance Fenstermaker, Emily Ozier and Melissa Payne Baker! Since this was our first event, we didn't know what to expect. But the party drew such a fun crowd, and we all sold lots of paintings. Best of all, we were able to support a great cause, the Think Ahead Group at the Center for BrainHealth. I'm thrilled to say plans are in the works for a second event sometime next year!

Artist Spotlight: Nicole Groth

I met Dallas artist Nicole Groth last year, when we realized our little boys would be going to Kindergarten together. The mommy-of-three is one of the sweetest, most upbeat girls I know. Her contemporary still-life paintings are no exception. She's got a great eye for color - some of the canvases are bright and bold, while others are finished in soft, subtle shades. Don't they just make you feel happy?

Artist Spotlight: Meredith Grabham

Meet Meredith Grabham, another one of the gifted gals who'll be featured at CelebrateART! on Sept. 8th. Meredith and I were once neighbors on Alta Vista Lane, where we both bought our first homes. I've always admired how effortless Meredith makes things look. She decorated her house completely by herself and it's amazing. And she's raising three gorgeous babies, (whom I often see her calmly chasing in stilettos, I might add.) I don't know how the girl does it! Her paintings reflect her personality. Meredith puts it best herself when she says, "I paint the same way I have chosen to live and parent. Freedom, gentle urges, defined parameters, and compromise give each painting a life that I helped rather than forced into creation."

Lizzie is a Dallas girl who's mommy to three precious little boys. She started painting for therapeutic reasons but before long, people (including myself!) started to admire her work.

A Treat for Trooper

This is Trooper, our Brittany. He's an escape artist, a food thief, and before he was neutered, attempted unspeakable things to my unsuspecting toddlers. But he's one good looking dog. A nice decorative accessory in our home.

Unfortunately, his dog bed is not a pretty sight. Especially now that we've redesigned our den with light, softer colors. Such an eye sore!

So I was so excited when I saw this rattan bed by Napa Home and Garden. It's made in three sizes (I ordered the large size for Troop, pictured here) and comes with a simple cream cushion tucked inside.

I've been impatiently waiting for it to arrive, and today the UPS man didn't disappoint. Here's Trooper trying it out. I'm afraid that's a look of slight skepticism on his face.

But I'm sure he'll warm right up to it. At least he better!

Shopping Scott Antique Market

My favorite antique show is Scott Antique Market in Atlanta. It's held every month inside the Atlanta Expo Center, and there's a huge selection at some of the best prices I've seen.

So last weekend, I grabbed good friend Karin and we escaped for a 24-hour girls trip. This was one of the first vignettes inside the door. How sweet are these antique children's chairs? Love the piles of weathered antique books, too. I picked up a few for my bookshelves.

We stopped to admire these lamps made from coral elements. These were pricey but would be easy to recreate with the help of a custom lamp maker.

And then we spotted these - a tall pair of antique doors from France. I've been wanting some for my new den, and the creamy pale blue color of these would be perfect. But, I made myself walk away. After all, this is supposed to be a "business" trip!

This little English folding table came home with me. I'm going to wax it up and put it in my shop.

Karin stole this pair of twin headboards for her son George's room. They are going to be such a fun project. Just picture them painted red and recovered in a ticking stripe. She only paid $75 for the pair!

When my "business" was done, I decided to reward myself with a little souvenir...

and a bottle of Pinot Gris and yummy dinner at the Horseradish Grill in Buckhead.

Back at the hotel (please excuse the terrible lighting), we unpacked all of our treasures. Karin found this set of hand-painted family crests for George's room. She's also going to frame the tiny toy soldiers in a shadow box.

Her daughter Reese is a jewelry nut, so she collected these cameos for her. She's going to frame them together, too. Such a cute idea.

Texas designer Megan Rice Yager

Texas girl Megan Rice Yager isn't afraid to decorate with bergere chairs, Blue Willow china and Fortuny fabric. But somehow, her spaces aren't stodgy. Megan was interviewed in the debut issue of TRADhome, and I think her style fits right in line with the magazine's motto - the new traditionalists.

Megan splits her time between San Antonio and Santa Monica, and although she's young, her talent has not gone unnoticed. Traditional Home named her as one of the 20 designers to watch, and she recently landed a coveted House Beautiful cover.

If you love her look as much as I do, mark your calendar - on Tuesday night (at 8 p.m. central time), Megan will be selling some of her favorite things on One Kings Lane. I'm not going to miss it!

An Alabaster Lamp

I can't resist an antique alabaster lamp. The petite size, creamy color and delicate carving make them so pretty.

But what I love best is how fun these lamps are to dress up. Just pop on a new shade and finial, and they look modern and cool. Drew Barrymore agrees - here's a peek inside her office. The black shade updates her lamp mmediately!

Some have lots of carved detail, others are simple and plain. They also have interesting color variation - off white to brown, and even pink.

I found this sweet alabaster lamp at Round Top, then reworked it with a linen shade, and an acrylic base and finial. It's in my shop now, although I admit, I am restraining myself from taking it home.

That's the thing about these lamps - they just work in so many places (like my powder bath, kitchen, office...) But I'm going to be a good girl and sell it - $625 at Antique Row in Dallas. Message me and it can be yours!

Formula for a Stylish Coffee Table

If you don't know where to start, just follow this simple formula: Books + Plant + Decorative Elements. Layer these three things together and you'll come up with something that works every time! Just keep a couple of things in mind - odd number groupings always look best, and try to vary height so you have something small, medium and large.

My sister Hayley's living room is almost complete, but she needs to add the finishing touches on her coffee table.

Here's a few ideas to dress it up:

Coffee table books - if the subject is of personal importance, even better! I have this book about the Park Cities area (where Hayley and I grew up) on my own coffee table.

A vintage glass dump (or two), placed on top of a stack of coffee table books.

A glass hurricane. It's tall, but translucent and simple so it's not overbearing. Plus, it looks beautiful lit with a simple white candle when she has friends over for dinner. Or, she can fill it with seasonal decor like sparkling ornaments or forced paperwhite narcissus bulbs.

A box, in this case an antique Chinoiserie tea caddy. I think it's important to mix old and new, and the subtle gilding on this box complement the gold tones in Hayley's room.

A white phalaenopsis orchid. I've never had much luck with orchids, but this variety is the easiest to grow, and Whole Foods sells a (virtually) indestructible one for $24.99. Just take it home and repot it in a pretty planter.

With two little boys, meals are pretty messy.

Our last set of breakfast room chairs were splattered with a mix of marinara and maple syrup. I was way too embarrassed to attempt consigning them. Out to the alley they went! So with a CLEAN slate, I bought six ladder back chairs for $60 a pop (brownie points from Stroud!), then ordered this cute little bench from Lee. It's covered in a linen check from Charles Faudree's collection for Vervain.

I assure you, I'm not completely crazy for choosing this fabric. I know, it's way too pale and pricey to be ruined by my messy monsters.So Moms, take note - what you can't see in the photo is that the fabric is coated in a super thin layer of vinyl - so spills just wipe right off! I had my fabric coated at Schneider Banks Fabric Finishing in Texas, but there are several companies who will do it for you. The layer is so thin so the fabric is totally pliable - you can even tuft cushions if you want to!

A Seashell Mirror

They're obviously perfect in a beach home, but seashell mirrors don't just reside on the coast. Designers are using them in everywhere, especially to add interest above a bathroom sink. I love how the iridescent shells look against the white marble, too.

Our New Den

When we moved last year, we just repurposed the furniture we had - which in our den meant using an antique red oriental rug and hunter green sectional. The room has always bugged me. The rug wasn't the right size, the couch closed off the space and the colors were too dark. So, after many persuasive conversations with Stroud over red wine, I FINALLY got the green light to redecorate.

The past two months have been so much fun - I've been all over Dallas and the internet picking things out. And then last Thursday was best of all - the installation day! I wish I'd taken a picture before we hauled the old stuff out. But here's the new SOFT SEAGRASS rug from Blackstone Carpet being rolled out. Blackstone developed the SOFT SISAL and SOFT SEAGRASS themselves, and it's the only place you can buy it. It's not scratchy and supposedly even more stain resistant than regular sisal. Let's hope so - this room is going to get a lot of traffic from the Arthur boys!

And here's the room with the new furniture! The chairs and sofas are from Lee Industries, which makes great, more affordable upholstery pieces. Most of the fabric is Pindler & Pindler, except the pillows which are from Kravet. The antique coffee table isn't new - I found it years ago at Dearing Antiques in Atlanta. Do you see my boys already making themselves comfortable on the chairs? I better have everything Scotchgaurded this week!

Here's a close-up of the pillows finished in the Kravet fabric. The colors inspired the rest of the room.

Here's a view facing the fireplace. I still need to work on the bookcases. But doesn't that EMYO painting look perfect above the fireplace? Unfortunately it doesn't get to stay. Stroud is insisting on a flat screen TV above the fireplace. I guess he's going to win that battle.

Especially because I still need to put the finishing touches on the room! (I'm almost done Stroud, I promise.) I want to add a pair of these iron benches in front of the fireplace. I'm thinking of using this Greek key tape from Pindler & Pindler around the border.

And finally, if I get really lucky at Round Top, I'd love find a pair of antique French doors to cover the bookshelves. This is going to be tough to find, but it's on my hunting list this fall.

So, I'm much happier with the room. The floorplan, natural rug and light colors make it seem huge. But, I've still got some more work to do. Off to pour Stroud a glass of wine!

A Convex Mirror

I'm a fan of antique convex mirrors. They're simple and sophisticated, and the perfect complement above a mantle, bed, or even mixed in with an arrangement of paintings on the wall. The most popular convex mirrors are the 18th century Federal versions. Some, which are topped with patriotic eagles, are ornate and very formal. A definite statement piece!

But personally, my favorites are the simpler styles. Usually a combination of black and gold, the only ornamentation are the 13 spheres encircling the edge, each ball representing one of the 13 American colonies.

Artist Spotlight: Bonnie Fuchs

Alabama artist Bonnie Fuchs is one of my new favorites - first off, she's a Dallas girl, which of course I love. But what I'm really crazy about is her painting style, which is influenced by coastal Mobile Bay where she's recently put down her roots. Sweet Dreams

We just wrapped up an estate sale at the University Park home of Lisa Whann (thank you, Lisa!) and I got a peek at her latest project, the bedroom for her three-year-old daughter. I have to admit, even though I LOVE being a mom to two sweet boys, I wouldn't mind having a daughter, really if anything just to decorate her bedroom! Lisa's designer Tracy Hardenburg did a great job, creating a room that works today for a three-year-old but will still be perfect in ten years for a teenager.

So, here's a little tour. Isn't the bed dreamy? I love the combination of pink and orange. And can't you just imagine the sleepovers? The panels can be pulled closed all around the bed, perfect for making a fort.

Here's a more detailed shot of the bed - beautiful monogrammed pillows and the pretty fabric. I forgot to ask Lisa about the art but it's the perfect complement. I prefer hanging "real art" in children's rooms - it keeps the space from feeling too juvenile, plus she'll love it when she gets older.

The little acrylic table sits at the foot of the bed, and the small stool slips right underneath so it doesn't take up too much space. It's the perfect place to color or read a book.

No detail was overlooked. Look at the window seat flanked by these sweet flower sconces.

And here's her bulletin board custom made with pink ribbon Soon, I'm sure it will be covered with crafts from school. And someday, with Party Pics!

Calypso Crazy

I don't know if you braved Target on Sunday, but it was madhouse. Calypso's collection debuted, and there were lots of ladies skipping church to get first pick. I admit, I was one of them. I had to bribe my boys up with a jumbo bag of M&Ms so they'd sit in the shopping cart, but it was worth it - I came home with some real cute stuff that was real bargain! So today, I set out (in my Target tunic, I might add) for another Calypso fix - Dallas' newest home shop, Calypso Home.

Next Thursday is the official grand opening, but I had a chance to check it out this morning. The shop is bright and fun - shelves are stuffed with ethnic pillows, super soft throws and small accessories. There's also furniture and some interesting art. Here's a little tour:

I have to show off the Easter egg tree my Mom made this year.

She plucked the branch from alongside the road after a wind storm. Then she hauled it home, "planted" it in a pot, and dressed it up with miniature baskets, nests, birdies and pretty hand painted Easter eggs. It's turned out so cute, don't you think?

Before and After: Leighton's "Big Boy" Room

My son Leighton will be starting kindergarten in just four months - an idea I'm still getting used to. So, I decided it was time to trade in his toddler bed for something a little more grown up.

I found this great iron bed when Stephanie Anne moved a few years ago. I stored it in my in-law's garage for two years before finally bringing it into our home. Here's a picture of Leighton the first night his "big boy bed" moved in.

And here it is today!

I originally was going to do everything custom, but after pricing it all out, decided it was a little too expensive for a five-year-old. He isn't allowed to have nicer bedding than me, right?

So I settled for a mix. I found the striped fabric for the headboard and bedskirt at Pindler & Pindler, and had both pieces finished by my upholsterer. Then, I found the simple tan coverlet from Peacock Alley and the denim blue Euro shams and duvet from Pine Cone Hill. I just asked my upholsterer to dress them up a little by adding some cording in a coordinating Pindler & Pindler fabric.

Next on the list - adding some toy baskets under his bedside tables and recovering his bulletin board in burlap!

Round Top, Round Two

Driving on I-35 is not one of my favorite activities, but I braved it twice in a week so I could catch both the opening of the fields and (my two favorites), Marburger Farm and the Big Red Barn.

My cousin Laura and I left Dallas before sunrise on Tuesday and pulled into town right after the Marburger tents opened. This beautiful planter was one of the first things I saw when I walked inside. Of course, you can see it already has a red sold tag on it. You have to move fast at Marburger!

The dealers really make an effort to merchandise their booths. I love this pretty vignette.

These antique whitewashed French doors almost came home with me. Seeing this picture makes me wish they had - they would look so perfect in my dining room hanging above a sideboard.

This giant birdcage was also sold immediately. It is huge. I'm wondering where it's new home will be? I hope it's got some tall ceilings!

One of my favorite stops is David Herron's European Lighting. He has a great selection and I always find a few things for my booth. This year, I bought this Spanish mirror for the shop.

Shopping Marburger is hard work, and we spotted this makeshift massage parlor behind the tents. Strange and scary, don't you think? We couldn't resist a picture!

Instead, we ended our day at Manuel's with margaritas. Cheers!

The next morning, we got in line at the Big Red Barn. It was freezing outside, but I'm so glad we got a spot early - we were the first in the door!

I didn't stop to take pictures inside. If you've been to the Barn before, you can understand why. It was a stampede and I was on a mission! I'm happy to say that between the two of us, we managed to pack the car full of finds.

I'm unpacking everything inside my booth this Thursday. Stop by and take a look!

Back from Round Top!

My mom, sister and I ventured down to Round Top earlier this week to check out the deals in the "fields." Like last year, we arrived just in time to see the dealers unpacking treasures from their trucks.

Next week, thousands will descend upon this small Texas farming town with a population of 88. By the time the swarm arrives, most of the deals in the fields are gone, bought and resold at the pricier Marburger show. So going early - especially if you're a dealer like me - has its benefits. I found lots of great stuff for my booth which I'll post later, but here's a peek at some things fresh off the truck.

Love this day bed - the finish and detail was amazing. This was inside Love Train Antiques tent which has moved to the Blue Hills field this year.

I bought a set of these vintage fashion prints from Paris for my booth. I just took them to be framed today! Wouldn't they be so cute in a girls' room?

This booth at Excess was completely cleaned out by Marburger dealers in just one day. The guy had tons of Louis Philippe mirrors and he was practically giving them away at $400 a pop. I used to think Marburger had the best deal on these, but this proved me wrong!

I'd love to get rid of my Pottery Barn Kids toy storage and replace it with this vintage wire rack that was used in an old store for storage.

Exploring Dolly Johnson

My mom and I ventured to Fort Worth on Friday to check out the Dolly Johnson Antique and Art Show. The show's been around for 48 years, but just recently had a makeover with new, more modern vendors.

It's a small show and just takes a couple hours to walk through. This was one of the first vignettes inside. Isn't that sunburst mirror gorgeous?? I wanted to snag it for the booth but the price was too high at $2,400.

I've been on the hunt for vintage concrete fruit baskets, and the detail on this pair was wonderful.

Look at this old Italian capital on the left. LOVE! It would be fabulous reinvented as a lamp or just simply displayed on a sideboard.

The show had lots of vintage holiday, too. I love the milky glass on these vintage Easter eggs.

Industrial continues to be a big trend. It's not for me, but I think if I was younger I'd want my whole college apartment done in stainless steel. How long do you think this look will stick around?

I also stumbled on some oddities, too. What do you think of these doll faces? I don't have any idea what they are but they definitely creep me out.

Taxidermy cobra or snapping turtle anyone?

I left with a couple smalls for my booth, but did leave behind two things I can't stop thinking about for me. For one, this 18th century Italian architectural piece. Not in the budget right now, unfortunately. But I think it would be perfect in my dining room hanging above a sideboard.

And, this black English chinoiserie writing desk in Adele Kerr's booth. I think I'd use it as a bedside table, but really it could go anywhere.

I walked away but did take Adele's card. Do you think she still has it? I might need to take it home, if so. Maybe it's meant to be!

I'm so excited to say hello to spring. But, a little sad to say goodbye to the warm wood-burning fires Stroud builds for us every night. We cleaned out the ashes this weekend so even if the temperature dips again, fire season is officially over at the Arthur house. I came across these pictures of different ways to dress up an empty hearth. I've never even thought about putting anything inside a fireplace except a fire, but now my wheels are turning! My sweet friend Meredith has fabulous art in her home. Some she's collected over the years and some she's actually painted herself. But her favorite (and mine too!) is the abstract that sits in her entry.

I loved it even more when Meredith told me that the artists were none other than her three-year-old daughter Stella and two-year-old son Yates. The pair did all the work by themselves, with no help from Mom. Then it was framed and placed somewhere where it would always be seen - right by the front door.

She did the same thing with these two paintings hanging in the upstairs hallway. Both kiddos were armed with the exact same paint and brushes, and these are their creations.

Yates' sits on the left, Stella's on the right.

Meredith also marked each child's first birthday by framing their very first drawings in her laundry room.

The work of some "real" artists will appreciate over time. But nothing will gain value more than these sweet paintings. I know they make Meredith smile every time she sees them now, but can you imagine how treasured they will be in 15 years?

Modern Mix II - Antique Furniture for Contemporary Collectors

A couple weeks ago, I shared my favorite antique accessories for modern homes. I had to follow up with a blog about furniture. I think every room needs at least one antique. It anchors the room, gives it a sense of history and character. There are so many periods that mix with modern, but here are three that definitely make the cut:

1. Directoire style (1793-1804) started after the French revolution, and is known for its simplicity and smaller size.

Because of the war's effect on the French economy, the pieces were made from less expensive wood and with bronze instead of gilt.I love Directoire chairs with a modern dining room table, and the side tables work just about anywhere.

2. Biedermeier style (1815-1848) originated German speaking countries after the French Revolution. People wanted to return to normal, so they created unpretentious, practical furniture for the middle class. The history explains its weird name - "Bieder" means middle class and "meier" was a common last name in Germany.

Look for light woods expertly cut to show the beauty of the grain, and not much detail other than the occasional black ebony inlay. Designers in New York have gone crazy for this style, so of course, the real deals are pricey and hard to find.

3. And finally, I couldn't write a blog without mentioning Louis Philippe (1830-1848), could I? I hope you're not tired of hearing about it, but I really believe this is the easiest and probably most affordable antique to mix with modern.

My son Leighton has a thing for candy jewelry. He could care less about wearing it, of course, but he loves to bite off those chalky pastel pieces.

My taste in jewelry is a little different. One day, I'm going to treat myself to a necklace from Elva Fields. Designer Emily Maynard (who named the line after her great-grandmother) scours flea markets for vintage brooches, pins and shoe buckles, then repurposes them into these gorgeous, statement making pieces.

Everything is either limited edition or one-of-a-kind, so if you see something you like, you better bite fast!

Emily is a mom of four kiddos (with another on the way) who lives in Memphis with her husband John. She's an Auburn graduate and primarily self-taught when it comes to her painting. Her work is sold at a handful of galleries in the southeast, and it goes fast - most shops have a wait list for her paintings. I can see why - she does a beautiful job building up the canvas by layering colors of paint.

Modern Mix: Top Five Antique Accessories to Collect Now!

We grabbed dinner on Friday night with one of my dearest friends, who just built a beautiful home in Preston Hollow. Most of her furniture is contemporary, but like me, she loves the mix. She asked a really good question - what are some antique accessories that I can start collecting that will fit into my modern house? Here are my top five picks.

1. Louis Philippe Mirrors

I'm crazy about the simple, clean look of these 19th century mirrors, so much in fact that I have two of my own! Most are found in a silver or gold-leaf finish, and if you can snag one with the original mercury glass still intact, even better.

2. Porcupine Quill Boxes

These boxes were made in the late 1800s on the island of Ceylon (today called Sri Lanka). They come in lots of different sizes and shapes, but most were made using porcupine quills, ivory and ebony. They look wonderful alone or layered together.

3. Italian Fragments

These wood and gilt fragments came from Italian churches in the 18th and 19th Century. Cost depends on the condition and size, but smaller ones are usually reasonably priced. I've seen designers mount them on basic iron stands, or recreate them into custom lamps or bookends. In my sister Hayley's home, she simply set them on store-bought acrylic plate holders. 5. Chinoiserie Boxes

The French term "Chinoiserie" means "chinese-esque" and describes a style that has a Chinese influence. You can find everything from tables to mirrors, but my favorite is the black Chinoiserie box. Atlanta designer Phoebe Howard was once quoted in Southern Accents saying, "There is something magical and joyful about chinoiserie boxes, whether they are tea caddies, game boxes, or sewing kits. The ornamentation is whimsical, yet the boxes are timeless, and the classic combination of black with gold works everywhere, in neutral or color-filled rooms." Well said, Phoebe. I couldn't agree more!

Saving Memories with Style

If you work as a Mom like me, you've got to keep up with a lot of paperwork. My boys present me with tons of art projects, homemade cards and momentos from school every year, none of which I have the heart to throw away. The question is, what do you do with it all? Here are a few solutions I'm planning at my house.

My mom framed some of our childhood masterpieces in her laundry room. To this day, the walls are lined with my second-grade nativity scene and my sister's Halloween skeleton made of Q-tips. Of course it was a proud moment for us when something was promoted to the laundry art gallery. But I appreciate it even more as an adult - it reminds me (and I'm sure my mom) that we 30-something women were once little girls. All you need are simple, store-bought acrylic frames like these, which are inexpensive and easy to open if you want to create a "rotating gallery" over the years.

Real Simple always has the best ideas, don't you think? Here, each child has a binder dedicated to their school year. I'd love to make some of these for my boys, and fill them with their drawings, school pictures and anything the teacher sends home.

I picked up a few of these library office storage boxes from the Container Store. I'm keeping them in the top of our closet for special things the boys give us, like the paper scrap where Leighton first wrote his name or the turkey painting made using an imprint of Benton's tiny hand.
